What a dental crown is
A crown, often called a cap, covers the whole visible part of a tooth to restore its shape, strength and appearance. Patients who ask us for a daant par cap usually have a tooth that is broken, heavily filled or has had root canal treatment. A crown holds the tooth together and protects it from cracking further.
When you might need a crown
- After root canal treatment on a back tooth.
- When a large filling leaves too little tooth to hold it.
- For a cracked or badly worn tooth.
- To improve the shape or colour of a tooth when a veneer is not enough.
- On top of a dental implant.
Zirconia crowns
We offer zirconia crowns, a strong, tooth-coloured ceramic with no metal inside. Zirconia suits back teeth that take heavy biting forces, and layered zirconia or porcelain gives front teeth a natural translucency. Your dentist recommends the material that best balances strength and appearance for each tooth.
Dental bridges
A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth by joining an artificial tooth to crowns on the teeth either side. It is fixed in place, so it is not removed for cleaning. Bridges are a good option when the neighbouring teeth already need crowns, or when an implant is not suitable.
Dentures
Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. A partial denture fills gaps among natural teeth, while a full denture replaces all the teeth in a jaw. Modern dentures are made to fit closely and look natural. If a lower denture keeps moving, implants can hold it firmly in place.
How a crown or bridge is made
- Assessment. We check the tooth and take an X-ray, and agree the material and shade.
- Preparation. Under local anaesthetic, the tooth is shaped and an impression or scan is taken. A temporary crown protects it.
- Fitting. At the second visit the permanent crown or bridge is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented.
Caring for crowns, bridges and dentures
Brush twice a day and clean carefully around the edges of crowns and under bridges with floss threaders or small brushes. Remove dentures at night, clean them daily and keep them in water. Regular check-ups let us spot wear or decay around the edges early. With good care, crowns and bridges can last many years.
