What veneers are
A veneer is a thin layer of tooth-coloured material bonded to the front surface of a tooth. Veneers can change the colour, shape and length of teeth, close small gaps and cover chips. They are the most common part of a smile makeover, the term for a planned set of treatments that improves the whole smile.
Porcelain veneers
Made in a dental laboratory to your measurements, porcelain veneers resist staining very well and reflect light like natural enamel. They usually need two or more visits.
Composite veneers
Built up directly on the tooth with tooth-coloured filling material, often in a single visit. They cost less and need little or no preparation, but may need polishing or repair sooner than porcelain.
Who veneers suit
Veneers suit adults with healthy teeth and gums who want to improve teeth that are chipped, worn, slightly uneven, gapped or discoloured in a way whitening cannot fix. They are not the answer for every case. If teeth are badly crowded, braces or aligners may be better; if staining is the only issue, teeth whitening may be enough. Your dentist will talk through each option honestly.
Worth knowing: porcelain veneers usually need a thin layer of enamel to be removed so they sit naturally. That change is permanent, so veneers are a long-term commitment.
About the “Hollywood smile”
Many patients ask for a Hollywood smile: a full set of very white, even veneers. We can create a bright smile, but we recommend a shade and shape that suit your face, skin tone and age, so the result looks healthy rather than artificial. Seeing a preview of the planned shape before treatment helps you decide.
What happens at your veneer appointments
- Consultation. We discuss what you want to change, examine your teeth and gums, and agree a shade and shape.
- Preparation. For porcelain veneers, the teeth are gently prepared and impressions or scans are taken. Temporary covers may be placed.
- Fitting. The veneers are checked for fit and colour, then bonded in place and polished.
- Review. A follow-up visit checks your bite, comfort and gum health.
Looking after veneers
Brush twice a day, clean between your teeth and keep up regular check-ups and cleaning. Avoid biting very hard objects such as ice, nuts in shells or pens, and ask us about a night guard if you grind your teeth. With good care, porcelain veneers can last for many years.
Alternatives to veneers
Depending on what you want to change, whitening may brighten your smile without altering the teeth; tooth-coloured bonding can repair a single chip; orthodontic treatment can straighten crowded teeth; and crowns may be better for heavily filled or root-treated teeth.
