What scaling and polishing is
Even with good brushing, plaque hardens into tartar (calculus) along the gum line and between the teeth. Tartar cannot be brushed away, and it irritates the gums, causing bleeding, bad breath and, over time, gum disease. Scaling removes the tartar, and polishing smooths the teeth and lifts surface stains from tea, coffee, paan and smoking. Many patients know it simply as daanton ki safai, a professional teeth cleaning.
Signs you need a professional clean
- Gums that bleed when you brush or floss.
- Yellow or brown deposits along the gum line, especially behind the lower front teeth.
- Bad breath that returns soon after brushing.
- Stained teeth from tea, coffee, paan or smoking.
- Red, puffy or tender gums.
What happens at your cleaning appointment
- Check. The dentist looks at your gums and measures any pockets around the teeth.
- Ultrasonic scaling. A fine vibrating tip and water spray break up tartar above and just below the gum line.
- Hand scaling. Small instruments remove any remaining deposits between the teeth.
- Polishing. A gentle paste smooths the surfaces and removes stains, leaving teeth feeling clean.
- Advice. We show you which areas need more attention when brushing and cleaning between the teeth.
Is scaling safe for my teeth?
Yes. Scaling removes deposits from the tooth surface; it does not thin or weaken the enamel. Some people notice small gaps between their teeth afterwards. These spaces were already there, filled with tartar, and the gums usually tighten as they heal. Teeth may feel sensitive for a day or two.
Gum disease and deep cleaning
If tartar has built up below the gum line and the gums have pulled away from the teeth, a deeper cleaning of the root surfaces may be needed, sometimes over more than one visit with local anaesthetic. Treating gum disease early protects the bone that holds your teeth in place and lowers the risk of loose teeth later.
Scaling before whitening and other treatment
A professional clean is the first step before teeth whitening, veneers and braces, because these treatments work best on clean, healthy gums.
Keeping teeth clean between visits
- Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste.
- Clean between your teeth daily with floss or small interdental brushes.
- Cut down on smoking, paan and frequent sugary drinks.
- Book a professional clean every six to twelve months, as your dentist advises.
Teeth cleaning cost in Lahore
The cost depends on how much tartar there is and whether a deeper gum cleaning is needed. Your dentist confirms it after a quick look, before the cleaning begins.
