What a dental implant is
A dental implant is a small titanium post placed in the jawbone where a tooth is missing. Over the following months the bone bonds to the implant, which then supports a crown, a bridge or a denture. Implants do not rely on the neighbouring teeth for support, and they help preserve the bone where a tooth has been lost.
Who is suitable for implants
Most adults in good general health can be assessed for dental implants. Your dentist looks at:
- the amount and quality of bone where the tooth is missing,
- the health of your gums and remaining teeth,
- medical conditions and medicines, especially diabetes and anything that affects healing or bone,
- smoking, which increases the risk of an implant failing.
If there is not enough bone, a bone graft or a different solution may be suggested.
The implant treatment, step by step
- Assessment and planning. Examination and X-rays or a scan to measure the bone, and a discussion of options, timing and cost.
- Placing the implant. A short surgical procedure under local anaesthetic. Most patients find it more manageable than expected.
- Healing. Usually a few months while the bone bonds to the implant. A temporary tooth can often be provided in the meantime.
- The final tooth. A custom crown, bridge or denture is made and fitted to the implant.
Implant surgery at Lá Dental Aésthetique is supported by our oral & maxillofacial surgery team, led by Dr. Um E Rubab.
Implants compared with bridges and dentures
A bridge replaces a missing tooth by attaching to the teeth on either side, which usually means reshaping them. A denture (often called naqli daant) is removable and is usually the most affordable choice for several missing teeth. An implant stands on its own and does not involve the neighbouring teeth, but it needs surgery, healing time and enough bone. Implants can also hold a denture firmly in place, which many denture wearers find transforms eating and speaking.
See crowns, bridges and dentures for more on those options.
After implant placement
Some swelling and discomfort for a few days is normal and usually managed with ordinary pain relief. Follow the instructions you are given on eating, rinsing and keeping the area clean, and avoid smoking. Once restored, implants need the same care as natural teeth: brushing, cleaning between the teeth and regular check-ups.
