When a root canal is needed
Inside every tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels. Deep decay, a crack or an injury can let bacteria reach it, causing inflammation or infection. Without treatment, the infection can spread into the bone and the tooth may need to come out. Root canal treatment, often shortened to RCT, removes the infection and saves the tooth.
Signs that you may need root canal treatment include:
- lingering pain with hot or cold food and drink,
- throbbing daant ka dard, or pain that wakes you at night,
- pain when biting or chewing,
- swelling of the gum or face, or a small pimple on the gum,
- a tooth that has darkened after an injury.
Sometimes there are no symptoms at all and the problem is found on an X-ray. If you have swelling or severe pain, call the clinic so the team can advise you quickly.
What happens during root canal treatment
- Diagnosis. The dentist examines the tooth and takes an X-ray to see the roots and any infection.
- Numbing. Local anaesthetic makes the tooth comfortable to treat.
- Cleaning. The infected pulp is removed and the canals inside the root are cleaned, disinfected and shaped.
- Sealing. The canals are filled and sealed to stop bacteria returning.
- Restoring. The tooth is closed with a filling. Back teeth often need a crown afterwards to protect them from breaking.
Recovery after a root canal
The tooth may feel tender for a few days, especially when biting, and ordinary pain relief usually helps. Avoid chewing hard food on that side until the final filling or crown is in place. Contact the clinic if pain or swelling gets worse instead of better.
Why save the tooth?
Keeping your natural tooth helps you chew normally, stops neighbouring teeth drifting and avoids the cost and time of replacing a missing tooth with an implant or bridge. A well-restored root-treated tooth can last for many years.
If a root canal is not possible
Occasionally a tooth is too badly broken or the infection too extensive to save. In that case the tooth may need to be removed, and options for replacing it are discussed. If an earlier root canal has failed, re-treatment or a small surgical procedure may still save the tooth.
Root canal treatment cost in Lahore
The cost depends on which tooth is affected, how many canals it has and whether a crown is needed afterwards. Front teeth usually have one canal, while molars have three or more. Your dentist explains the cost before starting.
